Raising serious concerns over the feasibility of meeting the deadline, the DTF said teachers are already overburdened with the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, the statewide drug survey and a string of government assignments, leaving little time to complete the registration process. Under the existing norms, schools that fail to complete registrations within the stipulated deadline face hefty penalties. The DTF argued that such punitive action will be unjust as any delay will result from teachers being diverted to government assignments beyond the control of the school authorities. The DTF said the registration process has become significantly more demanding this year due to the mandatory uploading of students’ digital birth certificates. Many parents are yet to obtain the documents, leaving schools unable to complete registrations despite repeated follow-ups. Frequent server outages on the board’s registration portal have further compounded the problem, often forcing teachers to continue the work from home after school hours. DTF state president Digvijaypal Sharma and state secretary Resham Singh Khemuana said teachers have spent several months juggling non-academic assignments, including answersheet evaluation, Census work, departmental training programmes, MC election duties and drug surveys. At present, they are occupied with SIR of electoral rolls. With a significant number of teachers deployed on these assignments and away from classrooms, completing the registration process within the existing deadline has become virtually impossible, they said. The organisation also criticised the board’s decision to increase the late registration penalty from Rs 500 to Rs 2,500 per student after July 15, the last date for depositing the registration fee online. It pointed out that while last year’s registration deadline was July 28, schools have been given a much shorter window this year despite additional documentation requirements, recurring technical glitches and a heavier non-teaching workload. Seeking immediate intervention, the DTF urged the PSEB to extend the registration deadline by one month and review the penalty provisions. We don’t just report issues, we monitor them continuously until they are resolved. People have also started approaching us directly because they believe ‘Fauji Sahib’ will get the work done. That trust has strengthened public confidence in the system,” he said. Supervisor Kulwant Singh, who oversees the north zone, said each day begins with online attendance before supervisors head to their assigned areas according to a schedule prepared by the DGM. “We cover as many wards as possible in a day. We identify civic issues and report the to the Chandigarh head office as well as the Municipal Corporation office concerned. The departments concerned then take action to resolve the problems,” he said. Kulwant said sanitation had improved considerably over the past year. “There has been a major improvement in one year. Earlier, there were around 100 secondary garbage collection points, but many have now been eliminated. Whenever we identify an issue, we upload it on the mSewa app. If it is not resolved, we continue following it up until action is taken,” he said. Despite improvements in civic infrastructure, the super- No sparring partner? This robot keeps the game going Aakanksha N Bhardwaj Tribune News Service Jalandhar, July 5 Savreen, 10, walks into the Table Tennis Hall in Jalandhar, picks up her racket and begins practising without waiting for another player. Her opponent is not another player, but a machine. The Punjab Table Tennis Association (PTTA) has introduced the Amicus Prime Robot, an advanced training machine, at its renovated hall in Jalandhar to provide players with world-class training facilities and help them sharpen their skills through independent practice. With the new robot in place, players no longer have to wait for a sparring partner and can practise for as long as they want. The machine comes with pre-filled stroke combinations, while players can also customise speed, spin and ball frequency to simulate different match situations, making practice sessions more effective. A visit to the renovated hall tells the association’s efforts to modernise its infrastructure and create a professional training environment for aspiring players. “The biggest advantage of the robot is that a player can practise even without a sparring partner. The speed and spin can be adjusted and different variations can be created, making it an excellent training aid. The top-end robot is made by Butterfly, the Japanese company, regarded as one of the best available in the market,” an official associated with the PTTA said. PTTA advisor Pankaj Sharma said the robot was purchased last month as part of the association’s efforts to introduce the latest technology for player development. visors said public participation remains essential. “Many people are still unaware of proper waste disposal practices. We encourage residents to hand over their waste directly to collection vehicles instead of dumping it in the open. Greater public awareness is needed,” Kulwant said. Supervisor Ashwani Kumar, who oversees the central area, said the most common complaints received during field visits relate to garbage accumulation, overflowing sewage, open or damaged manholes and potholes. Charanbir Singh said the supervisors also played a key role in the state’s pre-monsoon preparedness drive. “As part of the pre-monsoon activities, supervisors conducted extensive field surveys. During the exercise, we identified nearly 1,400 locations with open or damaged manholes. The departments concerned have been taking corrective action,” he said. According to officials, the initiative is aimed at strengthening accountability, improving coordination between municipal bodies and the government, and ensuring faster resolution of civic grievances through continuous on-ground monitoring by trained ex-servicemen.
