As per information, the child, identified as Dharamvir, was accompanied by his father and they were going to their relative’s home. The deceased’s father had held his son’s hand as they were walking on the side of the road. Talking to mediapersons, his father said, “The speed was such that my I couldn’t save my son. The truck was about to hit me as well,” he said. It is reported that the driver didn’t stop even after hitting the kid, but passersby forced him to stop the truck. One of the passersby, who helped nabbing the driver, said, “The driver didn’t show any humanity. He just tried to flee the spot. When we asked him, he said he would take the child to the hospital after parking the truck at its location. But, we caught hold of him,” he added. The family members cried and demanded justice from the police. The police reached the spot to investigate the matter. “We will register case against the driver,” the police personnel said. Hoshiarpur, October 17 Angered over being objected to their indecent behaviour, two youths ran over a salon owner and his father with the intention to kill them as they had reportedly stopped the youths from misbehaving with the employees of the salon. The police have arrested both accused after registering a case against them. According to information, Jagjit Singh, a resident of Guru Kirat Colony on Chandigarh Road, told the police that his son Abhayjit Singh runs a salon near the old court. On October 15 late in the evening, Gurwinder Singh Dhillon and Jagjit Singh, both residents of Chhota Bajwara, allegedly misbehaved with the employees of their salon, including girls. When he questioned the accused for their behaviour, they fled. The complainant said after this, he, along with his son, chased the accused and stopped them on Sutehri Road when they were getting into the car. When he asked the accused the reason for their behaviour, the accused ran the car over them and injured them. The people around admitted them to the hospital. Seeing the critical condition of his son, he was admitted to a private hospital. The police have registered a case against both and arrested them. Mukerian boy dies in road accident Our Correspondent PHAGWARA, October 17 A boy was killed on the spot when he was hit by a speeding truck near Village Khatti on the PhagwaraHoshiarpur road here on Wednesday night. The deceased Gurdip Singh was the resident of Mukerian. He was crossing the road after taking dinner from a roadside dhaba when the speeding truck hit him. The driver managed to flee. The police have registered a case and sent the body to the local Civil Hospital for postmortem examination. High-voltage shock damages house gadgets Our Correspondent PHAGWARA, OCTOBER 17 A major tragedy was averted when an iron ladder came in contact with high-voltage power lines, causing significant damage to nearby houses in Sukhchain Nagar, Phagwara, on Tuesday. Sonu, the house owner, said a neighbour accidentally hit the power lines with a ladder, resulting in extensive damage to their household appliances, including two air-conditioners, a refrigerator, an LED TV a submersible pump, , lights and electrical switches. The incident caused losses amounting to lakhs of rupees. Sonu added that the high-voltage current affected several other houses in the area as well. Upon receiving information, teams from the fire brigade and the Punjab State Electricity Board arrived at the scene and managed to control the situation, using fire extinguishers. A complaint has been lodged with the police against the person responsible for the accident and residents have demanded action. Khanpur dispute: BSP leaders accuse cops of high-handedness No place in mandis, farmers Cong, AAP claim big wins rural poll in dilemma over harvesting Garhshankar, October 17 A special meeting was held under the chairmanship of Garhshankar BSP in-charge Ravinder Babbar at Garhshankar to protest the case registered against eight people under various sections by the police after a dispute during panchayat elections at Khanpur village. BSP in-charge Punjab and MLA Nawanshahr Dr Nachhatar Pal, former president, BSP Punjab, Gurlal Saila, , Hardev Gulmarg and Congress leader Kulwinder Bittu also participated at the meeting. It was said in the meeting that three candidates, Gurpreet Kaur, Kulwinder Kaur and Kulwinder Kaur, were contesting for sarpanch in Khanpur village. They alleged that when the result was declared in the evening, the election staff first declared Kulwinder Kaur victorious by 20 votes. When the villagers objected to this, the votes were counted again. This time another Kulwinder Kaur was declared victorious by 10 votes, then the protest started again in the village, then the election staff counted votes for the third time and declared the third candidate Gurpreet Kaur victorious by 10 votes. On this, the villagers surrounded the vehicle of the election staff in protest and stopped them from leaving and started demanding the authentic result. To delay the process of harvesting is not feasible, because it will damage the crop. Mandis are filled with paddy grains. “Such scenario has come up for the first time,” said farmer Bhupinder Singh, a farmer from Khambra village. He is yet to reap crop on 10 acres. “Things have been slow. You can see the situation here at the mandi. There is hardly any space for the new arrival of the crop,” he said. There are scores of gunny bags filled with paddy that are lying in the mandi under the shed and in open. The crop was also getting dried outside the mandis in front of arhtiyas office. Where will I keep it,” he said. DC Himanshu Aggarwal today directed officials to ensure smooth lifting of paddy, stating that any kind of negligence will not be tolerated. He emphasised that SDMs should continuously monitor the procurement centres under their subdivisions to ensure no issues arise in any market. Dr Aggarwal said till date 1,09,903 metric tonnes of paddy had arrived in the district’s markets of which 1,03,230 MT had already been procured. Reviewing the procurement arrangements, the DC instructed officials to ensure smooth and timely procurement, lifting and payment in the district’s markets, stressing that farmers should not face any issues. Jalandhar, October 17 The Congress and AAP are making claims and counterclaims over the number of candidates won in the panchayat polls by their support. In the Jalandhar Cantt constituency, which has 50 villages, AAP claims its candidates remained victorious in 40 villages while the Congress claims win in 37 villages. Both AAP Cantt halka in-charge Rajwinder Kaur Thiara and Jalandhar Cantt MLA Pargat Singh refuted claims of the other having won majority seats. Jalandhar MP Charanjit Singh Channi in turn claimed the same, stating that the Congress had won 70 to 80 per cent villages in panchayat polls in Jalandhar district. Pargat Singh said, “Out of 50, we have won 37 seats in Jalandhar Cantt. The Congress had claimed victories in many villages. At Jandiala village, Congress candidate Kamaljit Singh, who is the nephew of Congress former zila parishad member Baba Johal has won. Apart from this, many Congress candidates Gurinder Pal Singh Shergill, district general secretary of the Aam Aadmi Party and newly elected sarpanch from Jamsher Khas village, being felicitated by AAP ministers. have also won in villages.” Thiara said, “We have won 40 out of 50 villages in Jalandhar Cantt. We lost 10 out of which two were won by unfair means. We have also filed petitions against results in Jandiala and Chittiani villages.” Thiara alleged that the counting officer in one of the villages was the relative of the candidate and a complaint had been made. Thiara said the AAP was the biggest winner in Cantt. Reacting to AAP claims, Pargat Singh said, “Everyone likes to make tall claims but we have carried out a detailed assessment. They may say whatever they want.” Channi said, “The Congress has won 37 villages in the constituency. Its candidates have won in over 74 per cent villages. We are still carrying out an assessment.” Reacting to AAP claims that 40 of the villages in Jalandhar Cantt have been won by the party, Channi said, “They may keep on saying whatever they want.” Gurinder Pal Singh Shergill, general secretary, Jalandhar, of the AAP became sarpanch of Jamsher Khas in Jalandhar, defeating the opponent by 274 votes. Shergill is the youngest sarpanch of his village. Man held for culpable homicide Farmer unions block the Jalandhar-Ludhiana highway at Phillaur against the non-lifting of paddy from mandis in Punab. The accused has been identified as Raju, a native of UP who is presently , living in Shamshabad village. Ram Gopal, a resident of UP and brother of deceased Jugari Devi, complained to the police that his sister’s marriage was solemnised with the accused 18-year ago and both migrated to Punjab in search of work. The complainant said his brother-in-law is a drunkard and used to torture her sister, adding that on October 11 evening, the accused, in an inebriated condition, assaulted his sister mercilessly, seriously injuring her, who breathed her last in the Jalandhar Civil Hospital on October 12. Ram Gopal said his brotherin-law is responsible for his sister’s death and action should be taken against him as per law. A case under Section 105 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder) of the BNS has been registered against the accused and ASI Resham Singh is conducting further investigation. Travel agent booked for fraud The police have arrested a travel agent for duping a man of Rs 48.44 lakh on the pretext of sending him abroad. Nakodar DSP Sukh Pal Singh said the accused had been identified as Balraj Singh of Talwandi Bharo village. Sourav Sharma of Chuharr village had complained to Jalandhar (rural) SSP that he had paid Rs 48 lakh to the accused for facilitating his migration abroad. However, neither he was sent abroad, nor did return money. — OC
