The accused have been identified as Sohan Singh of Yushafpur Allewal village, his wife Shindo, sons Buta Singh and Jogindar Singh Mohindar Singh and Balwant, residents of the village. Gurcharan Singh of Tibbi village in Kapurthala complained to the police that his brother Balkar Singh was coming to the village on his jeep loaded with fodder. When he reached near the house of Sonah Singh, the accused waylaid him and attacked and seriously injured him. A case has been registered against the accused. OC MAN HELD WITH INTOXICATED PILLS Phagwara: The Rawalpindi police have arrested a man with intoxicated pills and drug money, registering a case under the NDPS Act. The police arrested Jarnail Singh, alias Jaila, of Ranipur. During the operation, the authorities seized 40 pills and ?13,500 drug money from his possession. The police had registered a case against the accused and launched further investigations to trace the drug supply network. OC 60-YEAR-OLD DIES IN ACCIDENT Phagwara: A 60-year-old person has died in an accident. The deceased has been identified as Sukhdev Singh of Mullewal Brahmanna village. Paramveer Singh, son of the deceased, told the police that his father died in an accident. The police handed over the body to the family after post-mortem. OC TWO 'DRUG PEDDLERS' HELD Phagwara: The Shahkot police have arrested two 'drug peddlers' on the charge of selling heroin. As much as 20 gram heroin was recovered from the possession of the accused Nitin Kumar of Mohalla Chhimbian, Shahkot, and Ravindar Kaushal of Mohalla Bagh Wala, Shahkot. A case under the NDPS Act has been registered against the accused. oc MAN HELD FOR CASTEIST REMARK Phagwara: The Nakodar police have arrested a villager for using casteist remark. The accused has been identified as Gurpal Singh of Nurpur Chatha village. Gagan Deep Singh of the same village had complained to the police that the accused used the remark against him in an audio recording sent to him on his WhatsApp number on September 27 last year. A case under the SC and S T Act 1989 was registered against the accused. oc PROTEST BY ANGANWADI STAFF Phagwara: Workers of the Anganwadi Mulazam Union Punjab staged a protest at the CDPO office on Hoshiarpur road, Phagwara, under the leadership of Jasvir Kaur, block president of the Anganwadi Mulazam Union (pro-CITU), Phagwara. Tribune Reporters Jalandhar, April 1 The issue of the vandalisation of the statue of Dr BR Ambedkar at Nangal village in Phillaur does not seem to be settling as leaders and various organisations continue to demand arrest of the accused. Members of Valmik organisations burnt the statue of Gurpatwant Pannun of the Sikhs for Justice after he had reportedly taken the onus for the defacement of the statue yesterday. They also held a demonstration at Jyoti Chowk on Tuesday. Congress Adampur MLA Sukhwinder Kotli and Ravidassia leader Jassi Talhan led a delegation that met SSP , Jalandhar Rural, Gurmeet Singh, demanding that those who who defaced the statue of Dr Ambedkar be arrested. A spray paint was used by some unknown elements after which an FIR was lodged yesterday by the Phillaur police against Pannun and one unknown person for hurting religious sentiments. Former Union MoS Som Parkash has also said the attempt to desecrate the statue of Dr Ambedkar was being made to create instability by certain anti-social elements, who need to be dealt with a firm hand. Former Union MoS Vijay Congress MLA Sukhwinder Kotli along with supporters after meeting the SSP, Jalandhar Rural, over vandalisation of the statue of Dr BR Ambedkar at Nangal village of Phillaur on Monday. Sampla also released a video wherein he said, “I will guard the statue of the Father of Constitution at Nangal village on April 14, desecrated by the SFJ. I dare Pannun to come and get it removed.” He said this as Pannun is learnt to have threatened to remove all statues of Dr Ambedkar on April 14 on the occasion of Ambedkar Jayanti. Sampla said Ambedkar is the creator of the Constitution that has given the Dalit a level-playing field and granted them equal opportunities in all spheres of life. 12-year-old dies in car accident Tribune News Service Nawanshahr, April 1 The cases of death due to rash driving are on the increase in Nawanshahr. A 12-year-old died due to rash driving in Sadar Nawanshahr. The incident took place on Monday evening. One Narain Ram, a daily wager from Sadar Nawanshahr, in his complaint to the police said he and his sons, aged 12 and 5, were going to Naimajara village when the incident happened. They were walking towards the village. “Suddenly, a car coming at a high speed hit the boy from behind and he fell on the road,” Narain Ram, the father said. As per information, the child died on the spot. Until now, no arrest has been made in this case. The police said the identity of the driver was unknown and it is not clear which car hit the child. “We have checked the camera as well but we could not find anything. We have also taken information from Behram Toll Plaza. The investigation is on. We will soon nab the accused,” the police said. The post-mortem was done on Monday. The case under Sections 281 (rash driving) and 106 (deals with the punishment for causing death by negligence) of the BNS has been registered against the unknown. “Dr Ambedkar ensured social justice for all and protected the rights of every citizen. While providing legal equality, Ambedkar ensured through the Constitution that there should be no discrimination based on religion, race, caste, economic status, gender or place of birth”, Sampla said. Sampla demanded that the police should also register an FIR against Pannun under the SC/ST Act for belittling Guru Ravidas and Dr Ambedkar in his speech. He also demanded that Pannun be extradited from the US and brought to India for subjecting him to trial. Action sought against Pannun HOSHIARPUR: Dalit Chetna Manch members, led by Sahil Sampla, burnt the effigy of Khalistani Gurpatwant Singh Pannun in protest against the desecration of Baba Saheb Dr BR Ambedkar’s statue. By targeting transit hubs like the railway stations, the police aimed to choke the supply chain and disrupt trafficking networks. 1.5 tonne of seized drugs destroyed Jalandhar, April 1 The Jalandhar Commissionerate Police has destroyed narcotics seized in 35 cases.The destruction of these drugs took place at Green Planet Energy Plant Private Ltd at Birpind village of Nakodar. CP Dhanwant Kaur said the destruction of narcotics aimed to ensure that the seized drugs would not enter the illegal market or be misused in the future. The destroyed drugs included 15.70 quintal of poppy husk, 2.6 kg of heroin, 316 pills/capsules, 6.025 kg of ganja, 10 g of intoxicant powder. — TNS bus and PRTC had been working on a contractual basis for about 16-17 years. They said, “On July 1 last year, CM Mann had held a meeting with us and promised us that our jobs would be regularised. Tribune News Service Anger over remark against Rahul Cops conduct CASO at railway stations Jalandhar, April 1 The Commissionerate Police executed a cordon and search operation (CASO) here and Cantt railway stations as a part of its ongoing ‘Yudh Nashian Virudh’ campaign. The operation was led by Tejbir Singh, ADCP-I, and Sukhwinder Singh, ADCP HQs/ADCP-II, who provided guidance and oversight to a team of 100 cops during the search operation. The main focus of the operation was to curb the activities of drug traffickers and couriers who use railway stations Anger over statue vandalism State bus stands to be shut for 2 hours tomorrow Phagwara, April 1 The PSPCL has announced a scheduled power outage due to essential maintenance work on April 2. According to the Assistant Engineer of PSPCL, Chahehru sub-division, the electricity supply will be disrupted from 10 am to 4 pm due to the widening of the Chahehru bridge by the company constructing the national highway. As a result, power supply from the 66 kV Chahehru substation, affecting 11 kV Lovely UPS and Mahehru AP feeders, will be impacted. Areas including GT Road, Mahehru Road, villages Hardaspur and Narangpur will experience a power outage. Consumers have been advised to make arrangements in advance. — OC Two youths hurt in road accident Our Correspondent PHAGWARA, APRIL 1 An accident occurred on the Hoshiarpur road where a vehicle and a scooter collided head-on, leaving two youths injured. One of the victims is reported to be in a critical condition. According to witnesses, the accident took place this afternoon when a pick-up (PB 10 FV 3242), travelling towards Hoshiarpur from Phagwara, suddenly went out of control and crashed into a coming scooter (PB 36 HO 0752). The collision left both scooter riders Gurpreet Singh and Amarjeet Singh of Jagjitpur seriously injured. Given the severity of his condition, Gurpreet Singh was referred to a hospital in Ludhiana for advanced treatment. Reports suggest that the pick-up driver had already hit another vehicle before losing control and colliding with the scooter. The impact was so severe that the pick-up overturned. Bystanders immediately intervened, rescuing the driver from the overturned vehicle and handing him over to the police. The police are investigating the cause of the accident.
