The string slashed her neck, leading to her death at Kotli-Khakhian village on the PhagwaraMukandpur road on Wednesday afternoon. TRIBUNE PHOTO Congress gets its Municipal Council president in Shahkot Tribune News Service Jalandhar, February 6 After several glitches, the Congress finally managed to bag the post of president and vice president in the election held for the Shahkot Municipal Council here today afternoon. The victory has come as a big boost for local Congress MLA Hardev Singh Laddi Sherowalia as the party won the election with 10-4 majority. The ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) could win only in four wards. The Congress managed victory in nine wards and the MLA’s vote also got added in the polling. The name of Gulzar Singh Thind was announced as the president of Shahkot MC while Kuljeet Rani was picked as the vice president. Soon after the victory, the Congress held a big show of strength in the town. A DJ was arranged and a roadshow was taken out in all bazars and across main roads of the town. Sweets were distributed among residents as garlanded Laddi and his team moved on. This was the third time that the poll for the MC president was held in the town. The election for the MC was first scheduled on January 16, but it could not be held on the day as SDM Shubhi Angra reportedly fell ill. A meeting was called again on January 21, but again on that day too election could not be held. Thirteen councillors were administered oath, but soon after tehsildar Maninder Sidhu left the meeting owing to some reported rift in the councillors. Since then the Congress councillors had been alleging that they were being pressurised by the ruling AAP to join the party and the local police had also been harassing them and their family members at the odd hours. Hoshiarpur, February 6 The police have arrested three accused, including father and son, for the murder of an NRI to grab an amount of Rs 2.80 lakh which he had given to them for the purchase of their land. Several criminal cases were already registered against the three accused at various police stations, said Superintendent of Police (SP) Major Singh while addressing a press conference at the Police Lines here today. Dasuya DSP Balwinder Singh Jaura and SHO Prabhjot Kaur were also present at the press conference. The SP said on February 1, dead body was found from the jungle of Budho Barkat village. After a video of the body went viral on social media, the police discovered that NRI Balwinder Singh, son of Nanak Singh, a resident of Bakarpur village in Kapurthala district, had been murdered. The victim’s wife Surinder Kaur told the police in her complaint that her husband had come from Spain while she was living with her son in Canada. NGO writes to Gadkari urging construction of foot overbridges at PAP, Chugitti flyovers Tribune News Service Jalandhar, February 6 Citing frequent accidents at the PAP flyover and Chugitti bypass flyover, the Alfa Mahendru Foundation has urged Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari to approve the construction of foot overbridges at these locations on National Highway No. 44. However, the absence of such infrastructure at the PAP and Chugitti flyovers had put pedestrians at risk, forcing them to cross the busy highway and leading to frequent accidents. Mahendru emphasised that pedestrians, often in a hurry, attempt to cross the highway dangerously, resulting in crashes. The foundation urged immediate action, expressing hope that the minister would prioritise public safety and issue orders for the construction of foot overbridges without any delay.
