The deceased has been identified as Naresh Banga, a resident of Khanpur village near Mukandpur. The police have registered a case under Section 304A of the IPC against the vehicle driver who managed to flee from the spot. OC BIKE THIEF IN POLICE NET Phagwara: The police have arrested a bike thief and recovered a stolen motorcycle from his possession on Tuesday night. The suspect has been identified as Kuldip Singh, alias Deepa, a resident of Mukandpur. A case under Section 379 of the IPC has been registered against the suspect. OC THREE DRUG PEDDLERS HELD Nakodar: The Shahkot police have arrested two drug peddlers for selling heroin. The suspects have been identified as Rahul, a resident of Mohalla Dhorriyan, Shahkot, and Midda, a resident of Talwandi Bhai in Ferozepur district. Investigating officer (IO) Surinder Singh said the police recovered seven grams of heroin and drug money worth ~41,000 from their possession. The IO said a case under Sections 21-A, 27-A, 61 and 85 of the NDPS Act has been registered against the suspects. The Nakodar Sadar police arrested a drug peddler and recovered 104 intoxicant tablets from his possession, said investigating officer Balvir Singh. The suspect has been identified as Rajveer Singh, alias Raja, a resident of Rahim Pur village. OC ILLICIT LIQUOR RECOVERED Nakodar: The police have arrested a person for selling illicit country-made liquor. The suspect has been identified as Raj Pal, alias Raju, a resident of Beetlan village falling under the Mehat Pur police station. Investigating officer Sarabjit Singh said 30 bottles of illicit liquor were seized from his possession. A case under Sections 61, 1 and 14 of the Punjab Excise Act had been registered against the suspect. OC Youth stabbed to death in Phagwara Our Correspondent Phagwara, June 19 A youth was reportedly stabbed to death in Mansa Devi Nagar locality here today. Jaspreet Singh, Deputy Superintendent of Police, said the deceased had been identified as Sahil Ansari, while the suspect had been identified as Musahib Ansari, residents of Mansa Devi Nagar here. A minor altercation between the duo turned ugly, following which Musahib attacked Sahil with a sharp weapon. The victim was shifted to a hospital where he succumbed to his injuries. The DSP said the police arrested the suspect. He was produced before the local judicial magistrate, who sent him in one-day police remand for further investigation. Jalandhar West bypoll to witness triangular contest Cong picks former Sr Dy Mayor Surinder Kaur as its candidate Deepkamal Kaur Tribune News Service Jalandhar, June 19 It’s going to be a triangular contest between the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Congress in the Jalandhar West bypoll. The Congress today fielded former Senior Deputy Mayor Surinder Kaur as its candidate for the bypoll. The announcement by the party came when only two days are left to file nomination papers. BJP’s Sheetal Angural is set to file their papers tomorrow. The SAD is yet to announce its bypoll candidate even as the party today decided to add its Lok Sabha contestant Mohinder S Kaypee in its panel to finalise the name. Taking disciplinary action, the Congress also announced the expulsion of two of Kaypee’s loyalists from the party. Surinder Kaur, a five-time Municipal Corporation councillor, said: “Being a woman, I am proud to get the ticket. Though women represent 50 per cent of the population, there have been a few occasions when women have been fielded from Assembly segments in Jalandhar. Gurkanwal Kaur, former minister and daughter of former Chief Minister Beant Singh, was the last elected woman MLA from Jalandhar in 2002.” Suman Kaypee, wife of former MP Mohinder S Kaypee, had contested from Jalandhar West as the woman contestant on the Congress ticket in 2012, but lost the elections. BJP candidate Sheetal Angural is also a Ravidassia, but with Sialkot background. There are about 30,000 Bhagats in Jalandhar West and 35,000 Ravidassia voters. Nearly half of the voters here have Sialkot background, both from General and SC category. They are mostly engaged in manufacturing sports goods. Surinder Kaur’s husband Chaudhary Ram Asra too was a councillor in 1997, but passed away four years later. Her two sons — Karan Jallowal and Ketan Chaudhary — are engaged in the family’s leather business. to placate almost 19 ticket aspirants. Last evening, he visited the houses of all ticket aspirants from Jalandhar West, pressing them not to stand as rebel or join any other party or even give support to any other candidate. One of the Congress councillors said that it has become a ‘prestige issue’ for the party and there is pressure to perform in the Assembly bypoll after doing well in the Lok Sabha elections. On June 18, Channi along with senior leader Rajinder Beri had met former councillor Onkar Tikka and other party workers. Tikka said that he has been reaching out to the people with various promises. “We will definitely win this bypoll too. People have shown their faith in Congress during the Lok Sabha elections and the result will definitely reflect in the upcoming Jalandhar West bypoll,” he added. In Jalandhar, when the Congress-led Municipal Corporation was formed in 2017, there were 65 councillors from the party. Until 2022, everything was hunky dory but changes came after the AAP came to power in Punjab. Nearly 55 party councillors left the Congress and there were hardly 10 councillors left with the party while the others had switched sides. Also, last year’s Lok Sabha bypoll result had almost confirmed it when Sushil Kumar Rinku got elected on an AAP ticket. The protesters also demanded reconduct of the examination. AAP workers said rigging in the NEET exam was a crime and the PM and the Union Education Minister owed the nation an explanation. They also demanded that the Union Education Minister should resign immediately as 24 lakh children had been affected by the irregularities. AAP leaders alleged that there was rigging at two levels in the exam. First, the papers were leaked in Bihar and Gujarat and sold for ~50 to ~70 lakh. After this, the NTA wrongly gave grace marks to some students. The AAP leaders accused the BJP of having an old connection with paper leaks. They alleged that papers had been leaked 70 times in the past seven years in BJP-ruled states and demanded that the matter should be looked into by the Supreme Court.
